LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thursday marked 100 days until Kentucky Derby 151, and Kosair for Kids is using this time as an opportunity to help children in need.

Dozens of volunteers spent the day putting the finishing touches on more than 300 Derby hats and fascinators for the Hats On For Healing auction.

Organizers said many of the volunteers spent the Sunday after last year's Derby 150 at area hotels and the airport, collecting gently used hats from visitors on their way home. The pieces are being touched up and readied for the auction.

The exclusive one-stop Derby fashion event is happening March 13 at The Olmsted. It will include cocktails, appetizers and more.

Tickets are $40, with proceeds benefitting the Kosair for Kids Child Abuse Prevention Fund.

"Some sell for hundreds, hundreds of dollars, some thousands. Others are more on a discount, so it's a great shopping experience," Marki Hartlage, Kosair for Kids senior director of events and branding, said. "You can see all the different styles, all the different colors, all the different designers, so it's a really unique, easy way to find your perfect hat or fascinator."

While the event is in person, the auction will be conducted online.
