CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- One person died after a duplex went up in flames in Clarksville early Thursday morning.
The fire was reported just before 6:30 a.m. That's when the Clarksville Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 700 block of W. Harrison Avenue. That's in a neighborhood near the intersection of South Clark Boulevard and Stansifer Avenue.
Fire crews arrived to find the duplex fully engulfed in flames.
One person was able to escape, but another person died at the scene, according to Clarksville Fire Chief Brandon Skaggs.
"At this time, we don't know how long it was on fire before we got notified, but it was a considerable amount of time based on some of the things I'm seeing with the structure."
In the video below you can see sparks flying near the home.
"It's bad. I could see just what I see, that's a total loss, without question," said neighbor Phillip Bagshaw. "When things tent to spark these older houses, they will go up in a hurry."
Crews had the fire under control within 10 minutes of arriving. Firefighters remained at the scene spraying hot spots with water throughout the morning.
"It's sad when it happens. I pray everyday my house doesn't go up in smoke just like that," said Bagshaw.
There's no word yet on what caused the fire. Clarksville Fire said that is still under investigation.
