LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Baptist Health Louisville's neonatal intensive care unit has a new name and more room to care for some of its smallest patients.

The hospital unveiled the newly named Kosair for Kids NICU following a $2 million investment to expand and enhance the facility.

The expansion adds 11 beds to the hospital's existing 15-bed NICU, bringing the unit's total capacity to 26 beds. It also increases clinical workspace, allowing doctors, nurses and other caregivers to serve more newborns and their families.

For Kosair for Kids CEO Barry Dunn, the investment carries a personal connection. Dunn recalled his own family's experience in the NICU, including an extended stay for one of his children.

"I saw those nurses and those doctors in those times, and it was tough," Dunn said. "One of my kids in particular had a really tough time and had an extended stay in the NICU."

Dunn said having the right caregivers and resources available can make a critical difference for babies facing health challenges at birth.

"We are blessed to have the caregivers we need to take care of those tiny babies to make sure they get off to the best start possible," he said.

The $2 million investment in Baptist Health Louisville is part of a larger $5 million commitment from Kosair for Kids to support advancements in neonatal care across the Baptist Health system.

That funding will benefit four Baptist Health NICUs in Kentucky and Southern Indiana, including facilities in Louisville, Lexington, Corbin and Floyd County.
