LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new Juneteenth play at Kentucky Center shines light on Kentucky's untold emancipation story

"Before Freedom Rang," a theatrical production debuting at the Kentucky Center's Bomhard Theater on June 19, follows enslaved people who dreamed of and fought for freedom years before it was officially declared.

The production explores the Commonwealth's emancipation history while connecting the national significance of Juneteenth with Kentucky's August 8 Emancipation Day celebrations.

Organizers say the play offers audiences a chance to reflect on the courage, hope and determination of those who endured slavery while pursuing emancipation for themselves and future generations.

The show begins at 7 p.m. on Juneteenth and is free to attend, though tickets are required.

Tickets are available online.

The performance aims to bring an often-overlooked chapter of Kentucky history to life while honoring the voices and stories that helped shape the path.
