FRENCH LICK, Ind. (WDRB) — More than 20 vehicles once owned by former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel hit the auction block Friday, and every single one of them sold — including a white Ford Crown Victoria, a decommissioned ambulance, and a Lincoln Town Car with a bullet hole in the hood.
Even though several of the cars didn’t start and had to be left in the parking lot, interest in the auction was high.
Milford Renfro drove to French Lick from out of town just to place a bid — and walked away with one of Noel’s old Crown Vic's.
"Because it was Jamey Noel's. That's the only reason," Renfro said. "What am I going to do with it? I don’t know. I just bought it on a whim." His final price? $2,700.
In total, 21 vehicles with “NOEL” decals still plastered across their windshields were up for sale. Bidders snapped up each one, with prices ranging from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars.
A nondescript orange-and-white ambulance sold online for $7,000. A white four-door Ford brought in $20,000.
And a Lincoln Town Car — sporting visible damage from a bullet — sold for nearly $8,000 to a dealer in Salem, Indiana, who plans to resell it.
Among the buyers was Scott Cornish, a car collector and museum owner from Pennsylvania. He picked up one of Noel’s former sheriff’s vehicles, even though he wasn’t initially drawn to the car’s controversial past.
"I thought it was kind of cool,” Cornish said. “I have a car museum. I figured I'd put it in there. It just seemed like (Noel) certainly thought he was above the law."
Cornish is staying through Saturday for a shot at the higher-end cars in Noel’s collection — vehicles with current online bids soaring toward six figures.
“There’s a Superbird, a couple others... I don’t remember which ones,” he said.
Tommy Walker, a Louisville native and longtime follower of Noel’s case, is also watching the auction closely. He has his eye on one of the newer Dodge muscle cars.
"At least they recoup some of that money back,” Walker said. “And I get the car, and they get a little money back. Makes me feel a little bit good about it.”
All proceeds from the auction — minus fees — will go toward paying off Noel’s court-ordered restitution.
