LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Students from Kentucky State University came together this week to rescue dozens of fish trapped in a stormwater reservoir that needed to be drained.

According to a news release from Buffalo Trace owner Sazerac Company, the fish likely found themselves in the reservoir after the Kentucky River spilled over its banks in early April and flooded the property. So students with KSU's aquaculture program showed up to lend a helping hand.

Over the course of two days, the students were able to save more than 250 pounds of native fish species. Those included three game species, four non-game species, and various minnow species.

In somewhat of an ironic twist, the largest fish rescued from the Buffalo Trace Distillery was a Bigmouth Buffalo.

Cleanup efforts continue

According to an April 24 update from the distillery, flood cleanup continues, but the end is in sight. The retail area of the property has been moved to the second floor of the Visitors Center for now. People who visit the distillery will be able to enter the Visitors Center but most of the property is still being restored.

With apologies for the inconvenience, no walk-up visitors are being accepted, and reservations are required to tour the facility. To check reservation availability, click here

The Distillery will be closed on Monday, April 28, to allow for retail operations to further expand into the first floor of the Visitors Center. Please note: reservations are required for all guests visiting the Distillery until further notice.
