LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Finding a holiday job may be harder than ever this year. New data shows companies are cutting back on seasonal hiring — and experts warn that scammers are taking advantage of people searching for extra income.
According to The Wall Street Journal, holiday hiring in 2025 is at its lowest level in a decade. Consumer experts say the shift toward online shopping is one reason for the slowdown, as retailers need fewer in-store workers and more warehouse or logistics staff.
With fewer legitimate jobs open, job seekers are being urged to use caution when posting resumes online or responding to offers that seem too good to be true.
One woman learned that lesson after receiving a letter saying she had been selected to work as a “secret shopper.” The envelope included what appeared to be a real check for several thousand dollars — but security experts say this is a classic scam. Criminals often send fake checks and instruct victims to deposit the money and buy gift cards, keeping the cash once the bank flags the check as fraudulent.
Internet security analysts warn that any job offering payment before you begin work should be treated as a red flag.
Still, some major employers are hiring this season, like Amazon, UPS, Dick's Sporting Goods, Walmart, Target, and Macy's.
Consumer advocates say families under financial pressure may be more vulnerable to job scams this year — and losing money during the holidays can be devastating.
Experts remind job seekers that legitimate employers don’t send upfront payments or ask new hires to purchase gift cards. Slowing down, researching offers and double-checking company contacts can help prevent fraud.
Anyone searching for seasonal work is encouraged to stick with trusted job sites and apply directly through company websites.
