LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Do you still have a landline phone? In the next few years, it may be gone.
The government is now allowing phone companies to end copper landline service.
If you have older parents, chances are they still use an old school landline phone. Whether they like it or not, that's about to change.
Phone companies are starting to phase out landline phones, leaving older people with no way to get ahold of their loved ones, doctors, or even EMS.
It doesn't matter if you have a cordless phone or one connected to the wall, they are being phased out.
Nursing homes are offering Life Alert systems at no charge while they are experiences to outages, but occupants and family members are still upset.
As landlines go away, lawmakers like Ohio State Senator Kent Smith are pushing for Next-Gen 911 systems to help people.
"Next generation 911 has the ability to use routing technology so we will have the ability to know where the call is coming from," Smith said.
Phone and cable companies, in the meantime, are offering voice over internet phones as landline replacements, and the FCC requires them to give locations to 911.
