LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Check your text messages and emails! Many people are finding messages recently from EZ Pass or another turnpike authority demanding money.

If you haven't received a message like that recently, it probably won't be long until you do. Another phishing scam going around people's phones is someone claiming there to be a problem with your tax refund.

So how do you know whether it's a scam or not? There are some giveaways.

The most common is a three-word phrase: "Would you kindly?" Scammers tend to reside in other countries with English not being their first language. As a result, they tend to use old-fashioned language, British spellings, or just awkward grammar.

Most Americans don't use the word "kindly."

Other red flag phrases include:

  • "Dear sir or madam."
  • Any sentence starting with "am," such as "Am contacting you because of a problem."
  • Any grammatical or spelling errors; banks and government agencies don't misspell words.

AI may soon make these warning signs obsolete, making it significantly harder to know if you are being scammed or not.

Always be suspicious of all unexpected texts or emails. If you need to, contact the company if you have any concerns.
