LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville-based Brown-Forman will suspend production at its distillery in Ireland.

It's not clear when production will restart at Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery in County Meath, Ireland, according to our partners at Louisville Business First.

A spokesperson told LBF the company implemented a "temporary production pause" at the distillery, though the visitor center remained open and tours were still available for trade and VIP guests.

Brown-Forman said the decision was based on market conditions and planning for future demand. Because the distillery still has a large supply of the Irish whiskey, customers will still be able to get it.

The company acquired Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery in 2015 from the Conyngham family, who founded in in 2009. LBF reported Brown-Forman announced a $50 million investment in a new distillery for Slane at the time of the acquisition.

This comes after Brown-Forman cut about 12% of its workforce — more than 5,000 people — last year. The company also closed its barrel making operation in Louisville, leaving more than 200 workers without a job.
