LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — After three years in operation, Louisville-based Heine Brothers' Coffee has closed its Fern Creek location.
The shop at 7701 Bardstown Road opened in fall 2021 as a 600-square-foot, drive-thru-only concept during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to our partners at Louisville Business First, Mike Mays, the co-founder of the Louisville-based company, cited increased competition and a declining demand for that type of store format as reasons for the closure.
"As we've come out on the other side of the pandemic, we've seen that our guests still really value the café experience, and that’s a big part of who we are as a company and how we serve the communities we operate in," Mays said in a statement to LBF. "We want to continue offering the convenience of a drive-thru while also creating a place where people can gather and connect."
Mays said employees from the Fern Creek location will be reassigned to other Heine Brothers’ cafés. The company operates 16 locations across the Louisville region.
The closure comes as competition in the drive-thru coffee market grown, with chains like Dutch Bros Coffee, Scooter's Coffee and 7 Brew expanding in recent years.
Mays told LBF the company is still interested in the Fern Creek market and hopes to reopen with a hybrid format.
