LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Just a stone's throw from the site of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club sits a 14-acre property, one of several homes scooped up for one of Louisville's biggest events of the year.
Ellen Archer, who owns Luxury Rentals Louisville, rented out the 4,500-square-foot redone home that's nearly 200 years old. It features four bedrooms and several hand-painted murals.
"When big events come here, we definitely make sure of people's primary homes, and it's a great way for local communities to make a lot of money," Archer said Wednesday. "We'll have maybe a corporate group, celebrities, players for the PGA or just normal people like you and I, friends that are coming to the events.
The PGA Championship will return to Valhalla for the fourth time, putting the city in the national spotlight with 200,000 fans expected to visit the course May 13-19. Heralded each year as the strongest field in professional golf, the tournament is a showcase of the best players in the world. This year, 156 players will tee it up at Valhalla in pursuit of the Wanamaker Trophy.
Among the field at Valhalla are 16 past PGA champions, 17 additional major champions, 21 PGA club professionals and a who's who of young stars on the PGA Tour.
And the house is about as close you can get to all the PGA Championship action. And it has a gym and even rooms hidden behind bookshelves.
"You can actually walk to the course through the grass in about three minutes," Archer said. "You don't have to deal with parking. You don't have to deal with any traffic."
Of course, it's in Kentucky, so the bourbon tasting room in the house is a nice added touch for out-of-town guest. And if you don't have your own bourbon, Archer and her team will provide it as well as bartenders.
"Because it is high profile, we like to make sure everyone is super confidential while they are here and they feel safe," Archer said.
And that's the case with all the homes the company rents out, each one with its own charm, amenities and personality. And that comes with a price tag too. The cost for this colonial home is about $8,000 a night, and most of the homes have a minimum of at least three nights or sometimes more, depending on the event.
"Especially at Derby time, we get anything from $10,000 a night to $25,000," Archer said.
Since Luxury Rentals Louisville also acts as a concierge service, Archer gets her fair share of random requests — from specialty foods demands to a police escort to events.
"We love things like that," she said. "We love the ability for people to challenge us and make us and make their day."
