LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A major coal company is shutting down operations in Pike County, Kentucky -- leaving nearly 300 people without a job.

Operations at the MC Mining Complex are winding down, with just two units running until the full closure.

The company blames weak demand, market challenges, and payment delays as reasons for the shutdown.

Eastern Kentucky -- the state's top coal-producing region -- will take a major hit, losing 35% of Pike county's coal jobs.

It's not clear when the mine's permanent closure will take effect.
