LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Norton West Louisville Hospital is three months from opening, and it still has jobs to fill before it can start helping patients.
Applicants will need to have the necessary skills, but Norton officials said a respect and understanding of the community is also required.
Adrienne Whitelow is watching construction in its final stages at Broadway and 28th Street. She has worked for Norton for six years. Whitelow is a patient access manager who lives in west Louisville.
Once she found out that Norton would be building a hospital in west Louisville, she jumped at the chance to transfer because as she explained, it's my neighborhood, and she knows the people.
"It's Ms. Joanne, who lives two doors down. I take in her trash because she has trouble walking. It's Ms. Rosie across the street, who had knee replacement and now she can walk to the corner," Whitelow said.
Whitelow said her job has taken on new meaning now that she will be working in a community that she knows and loves.
"The opportunity to work here to be able to make a difference, change lives, to be able to save lives," she said.
Corenza Townsend is the Chief Administrative Officer of the new hospital. She said there are still 50 to 60 jobs to fill, but not all of them require a degree.
"We think that jobs at a hospital facility require you to have a degree, and they don't necessarily. So dive in a little bit deeper and look at those qualifications. We are interested in filling the rest of those," Townsend said.
The hospital is still in need of nursing staff, hospital support staff and there are also openings in the emergency department.
Townsend said anyone who signs up to work there should also respect and understand the community it will serve.
"Good customer service and a little bit of what you don't know we can teach you, but you've got to have that community heart to work at West Louisville," Townsend said.
Whitelow is ready to start helping her community before construction is finished.
"There were times that I would just park my car and sit in front of it and just cry, because I just can't believe the difference we're going to make," she said.
Norton West Louisville Hospital will be the first new hospital built in west Louisville in well over a century. It's on schedule to admit patients by Nov. 2024.
The hospital will include a 24/7 emergency department, operating rooms and 20 inpatient beds to start. It will also have primary care doctors, outpatient, specialty services, a retail pharmacy and imaging including X-ray, CT and MRI.
Outpatient offices will include adult and pediatric care along with women's services including obstetrics and gynecology. There will also be cardiology, orthopedics, diabetes care and behavioral health services.
Based on community feedback, the hospital will also have a centralized check-in area, community room, outdoor green space and a food pantry. The facility will also feature work from local artists.
