LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- West Louisville now has new access to one of America's fastest growing sports.
The Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center celebrated the opening of 12 new pickleball courts on Tuesday.
Pickleball has exploded in popularity in recent years. Tiffany Benjamin from the Humana Foundation said the courts will give the community a new way to get active and support physical and mental health.
"Pickleball is a great sport. It's inter-generational, it's accessible, my kids play it, my parents can play it and so we really want to have the opportunity to say pickleball is accessible for everybody, and it's important to stay active and focus on health and nutrition," Benjamin said.
The center held a pickleball event featuring a special father-daughter team from Louisville. Riley Bohnert is currently the No. 1 ranked APP Next Gen women’s player, and her father, Chris Bohnert, has been traveling the country this year to compete in the champion pros division of the Humana Cup. The Humana Cup is a first-of-its-kind competition in a team format for pickleball professionals ages 50 and over.
A donation from the Humana Foundation made the new courts possible.
