LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A pediatric rehab care center in southwest Louisville is expanding.

According to UofL Health, the Frazier Rehab Institute's outpatient pediatric program is expanding because of a grant from Kosair for Kids. The space has operated out of Mary & Elizabeth Hospital since 2016, but quickly outgrew its space.

The expansion will more than double the pediatric rehab space. It will offer support for many diagnosis like autism, cerebral palsy, scoliosis, Down syndrome, torticollis, dysphagia.

It will also help children with multi-traumas after vehicle crashes, spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries, like Onyx Sands. She was shot during a road rage incident on Interstate 65 in July 2023 and was left unable to walk.

"They're teaching us to navigate this new norm. That is priceless. You can't put value on what that does for me and what it does for her," Onyx's mom, Chyna Sands, said. "It's boosting her confidence. It's teaching me how to be a mom to a child with these types of issues.'

The expansion will also accommodate more children and more staff with innovative new equipment and technologies for physical, occupational and speech therapy for children from infancy through adolescence, according to a news release.

Construction on the site is expected to be complete by 2025.
