LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A major investment is pushing Waterfront Botanical Gardens closer to its next big expansion.

The James Graham Brown Foundation awarded a $500,000 grant to support Phase 2A of the Gardens’ master plan, a key step in continuing the transformation of the former landfill site into a vibrant public space.

The next phase will add the Graeser Family Bonsai Garden, Joe and Debbie Graviss Bonsai House, Tree Allée and Beargrass Creek Overlook — features leaders say will elevate the visitor experience and expand education opportunities.

"Realizing our mission to transform a former landfill into a world-class botanical garden where nature prospers and people thrive requires partners who believe in the power of this mission," said Philip Koester, president and CEO of Waterfront Botanical Gardens, in a news release.

Construction will begin spring 2026. With the new grant, the Gardens has raised $9.3 million toward its $10.5 million goal.
