LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) — A student was arrested Thursday morning after a gun was found in a backpack at Kammerer Middle School.
The gun was detected before school started, according to a letter sent to families by Principal Shannon Corrigan.
Corrigan said the school's weapons detection system alerted staff to the student's backpack.
A Risk Assessment Coordinator took the backpack, with the gun still inside, and escorted the student to a "secure, private location." The gun was then found inside the backpack, the letter said.
Jefferson County Public Schools Police arrested the student and took the gun into custody without incident.
"We are thankful all systems worked exactly as intended and are grateful for the swift and dedicated response of our RAC and JCPS Police Department," Corrigan said in the letter.
The student will face discipline "according to JCPS policy."
The school continued operating on a normal schedule Thursday.
