LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A celebrity chef visited a Louisville nonprofit for a special cooking lesson Tuesday.
Damaris Phillips hosted "Chef Camp" day at the Cabbage Patch Settlement House as children learned how to cook a traditional southern breakfast. Phillips attended the Cabbage Patch as a child.
"I cannot tell you how many memories I have because of the Cabbage Patch," Phillips said. "Being able to come in and hopefully give kids memories myself feels kind of circle. But it also feels like the right thing. It just feels right to be here."
Phillips taught children how to prepare a breakfast menu that included biscuits, sausage, gravy, French toast and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Campers also learned how to make homemade pies.
The experience led by Phillips was designed to teach young people culinary skills, building confidence in the kitchen and learn healthy eating habits.
According to her website, Phillips can be seen on Food Network co-hosting Southern & Hungry with Rutledge Wood and The Bobby and Damaris Show with Bobby Flay. She is also the 2013 winner of Food Network Star and has been a judge on several Food Network shows. She graduated from Jefferson Community and Technical College with a degree in culinary arts.
The Cabbage Patch provides academic, recreational and counseling programs for hundreds of students. To learn more about the Cabbage Patch, click here.
