LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- A $5 million commitment from the Clinton Global Initiative is designed to help revitalize Louisville's Fourth Street. Other public and private money will also help with that effort, which is expected to bring more businesses to the area.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer joined former President Clinton and the mayors of Chicago, Atlanta, and Redmond, Washington onstage during Thursday's announcement.
Former President Bill Clinton, who heads up CGI, said Thursday, "This is one of the most valuable things we could be doing to boost the economy in the here-and-now by creating good jobs, and over the long run by dramatically increasing the productive capacity and the quality of life here in the United States."
Chicago is investing in its airport and mass transit, hoping to recruit more companies to the city.Â
Atlanta wants to create more trails and mass transit to connect 45 neighborhoods. The Atlanta Beltline is expected to bring in around a billion dollars in private investment.
In Redmond, Washington, the plan is to rebuild the downtown area and put in light rail next to Microsoft.Â
"We have a lot more needs than we have resources," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel said Thursday, "and we need the private sector dollars to come alongside and help us do what we used to do from a national level and is no longer happening."
