FLOYD COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Dirt, cones, and construction equipment line a path of what was once Old Vincennes Road. It’s now a construction zone with the high school seen in the distance.
Old Vincennes Road is one of three ways to get to the high school and when school starts July 29, delays are expected.
School officials say about 200 parents and 300 student drivers will mostly likely experience traffic jams. Director of facilities, Bill Wiseheart, says people will need to allow more time to get to school, especially in the morning.
Old Vincennes Road is under construction to widen the lanes and remove hills and valleys in the road. It’s expected to reopen November 30, but until then Floyd County Public Works has suggested two detour routes. The north detour includes US 150 to Edwardsville-Galena Road. The south detour consists of taking SR 64 to Oaks Road and then Edwardsville-Galena Rd.
However the north detour route is also under construction. Turning onto Edwardsville-Galena Rd from US150, a left turn lane has been added, but no left turn signal. INDOT is aware school starts in two and a half weeks and says it is working to coordinate paving and signal crews.
“It's quite a mess,” said Louise Becht, who lives along the construction path.
Becht said she has to clean her car almost every day from all the mud outside her driveway and all the rain isn’t helping.
“Nobody works, I mean nobody can work when it’s raining and we know that,” said Becht.
Leaving her to question if the project really will be done by its completion date.
“The project is still on schedule... barring a tremendous amount of rain the contractor still felt and believed that they were going to meet those dates,” said Don Lopp with Floyd County Public Works.
County officials say the construction was necessary to make the road safer.
“I told him when he said ‘oh you’re gonna like it when it’s done,’ I said you've got a lot to prove to me,” said Becht.
School officials are also concerned buses will have trouble dropping off high school students in the morning and then an hour later picking up Highland Hills Middle School students and dropping them off.
“There will be delays because this is a construction project, yes. I mean that is a fact. There are going to be delays,” said Lopp.
School, county, and state officials plan to meet Monday to further discuss detour options.
