New Albany fire and police-car in the water 4-10-25

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The man pulled from a car that crashed into a deep creek in New Albany Thursday morning has been identified.

Floyd County Coroner Matthew Tomlin identified the man Friday as Curtis Franklin, 62.

Police were called to the area of 10th and Main streets, near the city's wastewater plant, just after 10 a.m. Thursday. A neighbor reported that a vehicle had crashed through his yard, hitting his front steps, New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey said.

The vehicle continued down an embankment and into Falling Run Creek, Bailey said. Donald Green, who reported the crash, told WDRB the creek is normally about 30-feet deep, but has risen several feet higher because of flooding.

Fire crews from New Albany and Clarksville, as well as conservation officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, responded to the scene and conducted an "extensive recovery operation."

Bailey said an SUV was recovered from the creek, and the man inside—Franklin—was found dead. The police chief added that the investigation remained active and ongoing, but pointed toward the possibility of a medical emergency.

As of Friday, the cause of Franklin's death is unknown. Tomlin said an autopsy is scheduled for Monday, and could not confirm whether Franklin suffered a medical emergency.
