LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville father and his girlfriend were charged after a 2-month-old boy suffered a near fatal brain injury.

According to court documents, Cortez Holloway, 34, and his girlfriend Alea Madden, 19, are both charged with complicity to assault and criminal abuse of a child under 12.

Louisville Metro Police said they were called Monday afternoon to a home on Dresden Avenue, which is off of Taylor Boulevard in the Wyandotte neighborhood, where the infant was found unresponsive.

Madden told police the baby was behaving normally when she put him to bed Sunday night. But she said once in bed she heard the baby screaming and going silent while Holloway said "shut up bro." But Holloway said the baby was normal when he left the next morning.

Madden said the baby's health progressively declined the next day. She said the baby "was cold and he was shaking and would not open his eyes," according to court records. She tried to warm the infant with a space heater and eventually called 911 around 3 p.m.

Records show the infant remains in critical condition at Norton Children's Hospital "on a ventilator with several brain bleeds, hemorrhaging in both eyes, fractures to his arm and legs, bruising to his head, and is unresponsive, dilated and fixed pupils, and agonally breathing." A pediatric protection specialist said the near fatal brain injury point to abusive head trauma.

Both Madden and Holloway pleaded not guilty in court Thursday. Madden's bond was set at $50,000 and Holloway's bond is $100,000.

Madden and Holloway are expected to appear in court next for a preliminary hearing on May 2.
