LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An eight-year-old boy in Madisonville died from fentanyl intoxication last month, after officials initially believed it to be from an allergic reaction to strawberries from a school fundraiser.Â
Trey Major Harris died on March 15 at Baptist Health Deaconess from fentanyl intoxication, according to Hopkins County Coroner's Office.Â
The boy's stepfather, Antonio Person, was arrested in March for for several drug charges including fentanyl trafficking, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, reported by WEHT. Person is now facing an additional charge of manslaughter in the second degree.Â
Person, 33, is being held in Hopkins County Jail on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled for a court hearing on April 12.Â
The death came after the boy ate strawberries purchased at a school fundraiser, WFIE reported. Madisonville Police in Hopkins County said the boy got a rash that appeared to be an allergic reaction. After Benadryl didn't work, the boy was taken to the hospital.
The family went home after they didn't see a doctor. The boy died in his sleep.
Police said several others came into the hospital with rashes and symptoms similar to the same type of allergic reaction. The people that went to the hospital had all eaten the same strawberries.
