LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Charges have been filed against a man shot by Louisville Metro Police in the Russell neighborhood last week.
According to an arrest citation, Asa McNealy, 30, was charged with wanton endangerment and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, after an confrontation with police on West Chestnut Street on Dec. 18.
LMPD said the incident started with two back-to-back calls for service alerted by ShotSpotter, which is a gunfire detection system. The system reported 10 rounds of shots from West Chestnut Street near 23rd Street just after 11 a.m.
Officers arrived on scene and found McNealy, who ran into the back yard of a home on Chestnut Street. According to the citation, McNealy could be seen on body camera video telling officers he had a gun. He refused to show both his hands.Â
Police said First Division Officer John Heisler fired his weapon at McNealy, when he reportedly reached toward his waistband. Once McNealy cooperated, the citation said "officers approached and rolled him over to render aid, locating the listed semiautomatic handgun (Glock 35) underneath him on the ground."Â
Officers said they secured the gun, took him into custody and gave him medical attention until Louisville Fire and EMS arrived and took McNealy to the hospital.
McNealy was taken to UofL Health Hospital in downtown Louisville in critical condition. He has been charged in the incident, but he was still in the hospital and couldn't attend a hearing on Dec. 26. A hearing is scheduled Dec. 30.Â
LMPD has not yet released the body camera video of the incident. It is department policy to do so within 10 business days.Â
