LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police are still looking for a suspect after gunfire was reported at Algonquin Park Saturday afternoon.

LMPD Sgt. Matt Sanders said officers received a report of shots fired near the field by West Gaulbert Avenue and Catalpa Street around 4:55 p.m. Officers who were already working in the area responded quickly.

Police said they searched the area thoroughly, but did not locate any victims. LMPD later released a photo of the alleged suspect, asking the public for help identifying them.

The shooting happened the same day the Algonquin Park Pool reopened to the public. The pool had been closed since 2023 and recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation.

Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins, D-District 1, who helped lead the effort to reopen the park’s public pool, held a press conference Monday to stress that the shooting Saturday was completely unrelated to the pool’s grand reopening.

“Whatever happened down there did not affect this event,” Hawkins said. “Everybody from this event went home safe. ... I don’t want the actions of one person to ruin what this pool means for this neighborhood.”

Hawkins did not discuss any other details from the shooting, but mentioned LMPD is still investigating.

Monday, dozens of people were outside enjoying the new pool at Algonquin Park. Many of those people echoed Hawkins' comments.

"Man, we don't need that down here. We don't need that down here in this neighborhood," Michael Bruce, who lives in the area, said. "Every neighborhood has their bad apples and their good apples. Right now, we're trying to let people understand that this, the whole neighborhood, is not a bad place to be."

LMPD said police are committed to maintaining a strong and visible presence in parks and public spaces during the summer. At least two squad cars could be seen in the Algonquin Park parking lot Monday.

"We strongly condemn this reckless and irresponsible behavior," LMPD said in a statement. "Gun violence has no place in our parks, our neighborhoods, or anywhere in our city. The safety of our residents, especially our children and families, is our highest priority."
