LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A city councilman in Breckinridge County is facing assault charges after he allegedly physically abused his girlfriend.

Derek Henderson, 41, was arrested early Wednesday morning on charges of second degree assault, menacing and resisting arrest. He currently serves on the city council in Cloverport, Kentucky.

According to the arrest citation, deputies with the Breckinridge County Sheriff's Office were dispatched shortly after midnight to the 300 block of W Huston to reports of a domestic incident. The victim, Henderson's girlfriend, had ran to a neighbor's house to call 911, where police were told what happened.

Henderson's girlfriend told police Henderson hit her multiple times, including once in the face, and that he allegedly dragged her around the house by her hair. The citation said she was swollen and bleeding from her knee, shoulder and the side of her face and lip.

Police then went to the house the assault occurred at and tried to knock on the door to get Henderson to come out. There was no answer, the citation said, so Henderson's girlfriend gave officers a key to get in.

Officers found Henderson laying across the bed face down with his hands up. He was taken into custody, where officers found scratches down his chest. Henderson confirmed they were defensive scratches from his girlfriend.

Henderson is currently being held at the Breckinridge County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond. His arraignment is scheduled for July 14 at 9 a.m.
