LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A student at Norton Hardin High School will face charges after he or she "thought they were playing a joke" that led to the school being placed on a hard lockdown.
Hardin County Schools said the student was reported to have had a weapon around 10 a.m., prompting the lockdown. The school resource officer, a Hardin County sheriff's deputy, responded and detained the student about 15 minutes later.
HCS said the student thought he or she was playing a joke and didn't have a weapon. The student will face charges and be disciplined according to the school district's policy.
"Hardin County Schools' first priority is always the safety of our students," district spokesperson John Wright said in a written statement Wednesday. "It is our procedure to update parents at such time that the situation allows. We want to commend the student who immediately said something to an adult so NHHS administration could deal with this situation immediately."
The Elizabethtown Police Department, Vine Grove Police Department and Kentucky State Police also responded and provided assistance.
