LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police is warning the public about what it calls a concerning increase in items being stolen from vehicles.
The department said the amount of stolen cars reported this year is down about 19% compared to last year. But reports of items stolen from inside cars are up nearly 11%.
Reports of these thefts have increased in recent weeks, LMPD said, especially in neighborhoods.
Most of the recent break-ins involved unlocked vehicles with keys left inside. Police said several incidents also involved an open garage.
"Don't leave your cars unlocked. That is the biggest thing," LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said. "What we see is people going around pulling door handles and looking for targets of opportunity."
To reduce your chances of becoming a victim, LMPD said do not leave your keys inside your car, be sure to always lock your vehicle, and close your garage door. Police also encourage vehicle owners to remove any garage door openers, key fobs or valuables from inside your car.
