LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man accused of killing a 23-year-old in a shooting last Christmas Eve in southern Indiana has been arrested.
Floyd County Prosecutor Chris Lane said Marlon Love was arrested in Maryland on a warrant issued for his arrest earlier this year on charges of murder and complicity to commit murder.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the 42-year-old is charged in the death of Jalen Baker, of Jeffersonville.
Baker was shot and killed outside the StoneCrest Apartments on Grant Line Road in New Albany on Dec. 24, 2024.
At the time of the shooting, New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey said offers were called to the scene at 9:30 p.m. on a report that gunshots had been fired. Once on scene, officers found Baker outside with multiple gunshot wounds. A probable cause affidavit says Baker "did not appear to have signs of life." He was taken to Baptist Floyd Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Love's extradition back to Indiana is currently pending. His arrest isn't the first in Baker's death. Kennedy Forrest was arrested in late January this year, but wasn't charged with Baker's murder. Forrest was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, assisting a criminal and obstruction of justice.
According to court documents, Forrest was living at the apartment complex at the time of the shooting and was there when it happened. Responding officers took her phone and she was taken to the New Albany Police Department for an interview after the shooting.
Police later learned Forrest was in an "on-again, off-again" relationship with Timothy Love, the "presumed nephew" of Marlon Love, a probable cause affidavit states.
The probable cause affidavit said Timothy Love paid Forrest for information about Baker the same night of the shooting.
The document states Forrest only initiated a relationship with Baker because Timothy Love offered to pay her for information about him, and was under the impression Baker was being set up to commit a robbery. She told police in an interview that she had overheard Marlon Love talking to Timothy Love about needing money, how there was a "hit" out on Baker and that "it would be easy to get money by collecting it off of people's heads."
Forrest also told police that Baker had carried out two robberies, one of which happened in Louisville. The person who was robbed in Louisville, she said, put out a hit on Baker for $25,000, according to court documents.
In an interview with investigators, Baker's mother said her son and Timothy Love had a "long history of violence" between them. Police later learned both had several previous charges related to guns and narcotics, and "having affiliations with opposing gangs." Police also learned Baker was among suspects believed to have been involved in a drive-by shooting at an address that previously belonged to Timothy Love.
A neighbor who was at the New Albany apartment complex at the time of the Dec. 24 shooting told police they saw a person "wearing a ski mask in the stairwell just before the shooting occurred." Police said the neighbor had gotten home around 9:30 p.m. the night of the shooting and noticed "a Black male subject wearing a ski mask on the concrete patio on the stairwell (the scene of the shooting)."
According to court documents, the neighbor's description of the man matched Marlon Love, based on his Kentucky license.
Surveillance footage also showed Marlon Love's vehicle leaving the apartment complex shortly after the shooting.
Marlon Love does not yet have a court date set in Floyd County, pending his extradition back to Indiana.
Timothy Love was arrested in January on conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced to more than 19 years in prison after taking a plea deal. The attempted murder and robbery charges filed against him were dropped as part of the deal.
Forrest also took a plea deal and was sentenced to 642 days of supervised probation. However, she's due in court for a hearing Nov. 24 on a probation violation dated Oct. 28.
