LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man is facing several charges after he allegedly assaulted a Kentucky State Police trooper on an interstate bridge in Livingston County earlier this week.Ā

According to a news release Tuesday from KSP, the trooper spotted a pedestrian Monday — later identified as 28-year-old Ravon Briggs — walking on the Interstate 24 Cumberland River Bridge with several backpacks. Pedestrians are prohibited from walking on interstates or limited access highways, so the trooper stopped to check on Briggs and assist him off the interstate.Ā

After the trooper activated his emergency equipment and pulled alongside Briggs, he "made some sort of sign motioning over his eye like he was telling me to get out of his way," according to court documents. When Briggs was asked where he was headed, he said "he was going to Louisville and that he was hiking back from California."

Briggs refused to identify himself or comply with directions to stop walking, according to the release. After several verbal commands were ignored, the trooper decided to arrest Briggs, but he refused to stop walking.Ā

That's when the trooper told Briggs he was going to be tased if he didn't comply. Instead of stopping, Briggs stopped and swung one of his bags at the trooper, who then deployed a taser, but it hit one of the backpacks. So the trooper used another taser cartridge that brought Briggs to the ground.Ā

As the trooper got on top of Briggs, he kept reaching for his gun belt. Afternoon traffic was heavy on the interstate, and a passerby stopped to help just as the trooper got Briggs into handcuffs. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of the taser wound before he was booked into the McCracken County detention center.Ā

He is now facing several charges, including third-degree assault of a police officer, resisting arrest, menacing, criminal trespassing, and stopping, standing or parking on a limited access highway.Ā

After Briggs was taken into custody, police learned he already had three outstanding warrants for his arrest. He was served with those warrants before being taken to jail on a $5,000 cash bond. He is due in arraignment court Sept. 11.Ā

The trooper was slightly injured during the struggle with Briggs, and KSP said it's grateful for the "the kind citizen who witnessed the incident and stopped to render aid."
