LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man was found guilty of murder earlier this month in connection to a fatal shooting in September 2022.
The shooting took place around 8 p.m. Sept. 11 in the 200 block of East Wampum Avenue, near Interstate 264. Louisville Metro Police said officers responded to find a man who had been shot multiple times. He later died at the hospital.
Laron Spalding was quickly arrested and charged in the murder. He was 51 at the time of the shooting. This month, he was found guilty of murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said Monday that Spalding's conviction is the first secured by his Violent Crime Reduction Team.
"We created this first-of-its-kind team to go after trigger pullers," Coleman said in a news release. "This murderer already had a felony conviction and shouldn’t have even had a gun. By working together with our Jefferson Commonwealth’s Attorney and federal partners to increase firearm prosecutions of all kinds in Louisville, we can take more criminals off the streets, hopefully before they take a life."
In October 2024, Coleman and Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the creation of the team, which also includes the local courts, commonwealth's attorney, LMPD and county attorney's office.
Coleman said the bipartisan effort is aimed at sending a powerful message to criminals.
"Historically, the Office of the Kentucky Attorney General has not had an active role in law enforcement here in Jefferson County," he said when the team was announced. "That ends now."
Spalding will be sentenced in a Jefferson County courtroom Feb. 9.
