LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville man was resentenced to prison in a 34-year-old case on Thursday.
Henry Junie Crawford, Jr., 60, was resentenced to the maximum penalty of 70 years in prison for rape, sodomy, robbery and burglary in a 1990 case in Jefferson County.
“For the survivor of this crime to have to wait 34 years for trial proceedings to finally wrap is unimaginable," Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina D. Whethers, said in a release on Friday. "However, the conclusion of this case should say to everyone that no matter how long it takes, if you commit vicious crimes against the community, we’ll make sure justice is done."
Crawford was originally convicted in 2006 on multiple burglary charges, and while serving prison time for those crimes, his DNA was taken. Authorities matched his DNA to a 1990 rape cold case.
A jury found Crawford guilty of rape, sodomy, robbery, burglary and being a persistent felony offender in 2010. At the time, due to his persistent felony offender status, the law led the jury to recommend 50 years for each charge, running consecutively, resulting in the original sentence of 200 years.
In 2024, the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled in Crawford's case that he would need to be resentenced based on the current law that puts sentence limits on some convictions., resulting in the resentence of 70 years.Â
