LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Metro Police Department is looking for a woman accused of preying on and robbing an 85-year-old woman at a Louisville Walmart.
Mary Wright, 85, said she was going about her business shopping at Walmart off of Preston Highway, south of the Outer Loop. As she was loading her items into her car, that's when she said she was targeted and robbed.
Sitting between her family at her daughter's business on Wednesday, Wright can't begin to understand why she was the victim of a robbery.
"I was kind of in shock," she said. "Why did you do that? You don't even know me."
According to a social media post by LMPD, Wright was followed out of the store into the parking lot. As Wright loaded her groceries, the suspect stole her property. Police believe the suspect had help, and was spotted fleeing the parking lot in a white SUV that was circling in the parking lot.
"I took off after her because I couldn't — I was limping and I couldn't run very fast," Wright said. "I don't know what I'd do if I caught her."
Wright's keys, credit and debit cards and more belongings were in that purse stolen.
Her daughters have been helping piece back together her life after the April incident. That includes replacing credit and debit cards, freezing her credit, and getting her a new I.D.
"It's been ongoing trying to get everything closed down," said her daughter Terry Barker. "Took her car keys, her house keys, had to change her locks on her home, it's been a lot."
The family says surveillance video shows the suspect following Wright inside Walmart and out to the parking lot.
According to its Facebook post, LMPD believes the woman has done this before in other areas of Louisville.
In a statement sent to WDRB, LMPD said:
"We always recommend people be aware of their surroundings while in public. There are always individual criminals willing to prey on others and take advantage of any opportunity to victimize them. LMPD stands ready to identify, arrest, and hold accountable those who perpetrate these types of crimes. We always need the help of the public, and identifying this alleged perpetrator is the first step in bringing them to justice."
The family hopes bringing attention to this issue will protect other people.
"I just hate to know she's done something else like that," Wright said. "I know how upset it me but I calmed down because I know God was with me."
Other than stealing physical items, the family also said she stole Wright's independence.
"Now we're having to make sure we're with her," Barker said.
But they're thankful Wright wasn't hurt physically.
"If she tried to fight her back possibly that is when she may have hurt her," Barker said. "She wasn't able to fight her back."
But Wright said she wanted to fight back.
