LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville leaders said the city continued to see a decline in gun violence in July, with homicides and non-fatal shootings reaching some of their lowest monthly totals in years.
Mayor Craig Greenberg announced Wednesday that Louisville recorded five homicides in July, down from 12 during the same month in 2025 — a 58% decrease and the fewest July homicides since 2014. City leaders also said July had the lowest number of non-fatal shootings since 2018 and the fewest combined homicides and non-fatal shootings for the month since 2017.
Greenberg said the numbers reflect continued progress in the city's efforts to reduce violent crime through the Safe Louisville initiative.
"Public safety is my top priority, and this shows what's possible when we work together more collaboratively and comprehensively than ever before to reduce violent crime," Greenberg said in a written statement Wednesday. "This is encouraging progress, but our work is far from finished. Every person in every Louisville neighborhood deserves to be safe and feel safe, and we are committed to consistent, lasting progress in the months and years ahead."
The announcement followed the release of the first annual report on the city's Safe Louisville plan, which launched in 2025 with a goal of reducing violent crime by at least 15% each year through 2030. According to the city, Louisville has seen a 19% decrease in homicide victims and a 16% decline in non-fatal shooting victims so far in 2026 compared with the same point last year.
Officials also said Louisville is on pace for a fourth consecutive year of declining gun violence, with each year since 2023 recording fewer homicides and non-fatal shootings than the year before.
