LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Madison, Indiana, man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday during a "brief" standoff with police.

The City of Madison Police Department said officers were called just before 4 p.m. to a report that a woman was attacked in the 1900 block of Wolf Trails Drive.

Officers responding to the scene found a woman with lacerations to her head, the police department said. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The alleged suspect, Clinton Toland, 50, of Madison, was found at a home on Adams Drive. Police said the homeowner let officers inside, where they found Toland in a hallway.

When officers told Toland to come to them, he pulled out a handgun, went into a bathroom and locked the door. Police said "within seconds," they heard "what they believed to be a gunshot."

Police were able to force the bathroom door open, and Toland was found deceased from an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."

No officers fired their weapons during the incident.
