LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man was rushed to the hospital in serious condition after three dump trucks crashed into two other vehicles on Interstate 65 southbound Tuesday morning.

According to LMPD spokesman Aaron Ellis, LMPD officers were called to I-65 southbound near University Boulevard shortly after 5:30 a.m. for a crash.

Investigation showed that two passenger cars were involved in a crash near that location and fled the scene. One fled on foot, and the other was believed to be picked up by another car and continued south.

It is not known if either of those drivers had any injuries, Ellis said.

Shortly after, three dump trucks came upon the crash and had little to no time to react, causing a chain reaction crash.

One of the dump truck drivers, a man, had to be cut out from truck by LFD. He was transported to University Hospital with "serious injuries" and rushed into surgery, according to Ellis.

The two other dump truck drivers were cleared on scene by EMS and are expected to be okay.

The roadway was reopened at 9:50 a.m.

LMPD's Fourth Division is leading the investigation.
