LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police said two people are dead after a head-on collision on the Gene Snyder Freeway early Sunday morning.
The crash happened just before 2 a.m. on Interstate 265 just past the New Cut Road Interchange.
LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis a man was driving the wrong way down the highway when he crashed into another car. Police believe he went onto I-265 at Dixie Highway and traveled northbound in the southbound lanes.
The man crashed into a passenger vehicle driven by a woman who was going southbound in the proper lanes. Ellis said both vehicles were seriously damaged in the crash.
Both people died at the scene of the crash. They haven't been identified yet.
No other cars were involved in the crash.
Police have not revealed if the initial wrong-way driver was impaired. Both southbound lanes of the Gene Snyder near New Cut Road were closed for several hours.
LMPD's Traffic Unit is investigating the crash.
