Police said two people shot Harrison in her driveway. Her family told WDRB six years ago that she made a run to the store and was gone less than five minutes. At the time, the family said her father found her dead in her car.
According to prosecutors, police linked Smithers to the scene through witness descriptions and surveillance images. They also traced his phone to the scene and the murder weapon back to him.
Smithers is already in prison. Prosecutors said he will serve the 25-year sentence concurrently with the 17 years he is currently serving on other charges.
