LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man was shot and killed by a Louisville Metro Police officer after he stabbed an officer in the chest Sunday, according to police.

LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said police responded to a report of a possibly intoxicated man in the 3300 block of Arterburn Avenue, near Frankfort Avenue, around 12:30 p.m. Humphrey said the man was yelling at neighbors and broke windows at an apartment in Crescent Hill. Police said the man, who hasn't been identified, had a knife.

"There was a man back at the condos back there," neighbor Aline Meeker said. "I could tell that much, yelling and screaming really loudly and cursing and just carrying on."

Police told the man to not touch the knife as they tried to detain him with handcuffs, but the man resisted.

"A struggle ensued that went to the ground, one of the officers attempted to deploy a taser, which was ineffective," Humphrey said. "During that struggle, the subject retrieved the knife and stabbed an officer in the chest."

The vest that the police officer was wearing stopped the knife and he wasn't injured.

"After that, the other officer shot the subject in the head at least one time," Humphrey said.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"The next thing I heard a pop and I thought it's a gun, maybe it's just a firework," Meeker said.

Humphrey said there is body worn camera footage of the incident, which will be released within 10 business days. The police officers involved in the incident will be placed on paid administrative leave.

"No one else was more seriously injured in a situation that could have been horribly worse," Humphrey said.
