LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Neighbors gathered at Algonquin Park Tuesday evening to talk about ways to improve safety in the neighborhood.

The meeting was held on the heels of several instances of violence at or near the park.

At the end of May, police said a teenager fired a gun near the pool on the day it opened

Then, just a few weeks later, two men were shot at the basketball court area of the park on a Sunday afternoon. Louisville Metro Police said an underage boy was arrested for the crime.

Neighbors said they're fed up with the violence, but the issue is larger than just the park.

"We're not focusing on the real issue," Denise Hazard Lewis, who lives nearby, said. "Why are we allowing children to have guns? And if there is a gun in the house, why are we just slapping someone on the hand because they have a gun?"

Algonquin Park already has surveillance cameras, security at the pool and regular police patrols.
