NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Steps away from houses decorated for Halloween on the west side of New Albany are the remnants of a crime scene, the latest homicide to hit the riverside southern Indiana city.

David Bruce and most of his family have lived in the New Albany neighborhood for years, but now, violence has shaken the quiet community his family has called home for decades.

"I just think there are too many guns on the street, but that's just me," Bruce said. "My wife is scared to death. She won't even go out the back door now."

A man died at the hospital after being shot Monday morning, New Albany police said. Officers responded to the shooting at 325 West 8th Street at 10:06 a.m. When they arrived on scene, they found a man outside of the home who had been shot, Chief Todd Bailey said. The victim was taken to UofL  Hospital where he later died, Indiana State Police said in a news release Monday evening. He was identified as Johntae Trumbo, 30, of Jeffersonville, Indiana.

ISP Master Trooper Philip Hensley said in an update Monday evening that the alleged shooter, a 17-year-old boy, stayed at the scene and was detained as soon as officers arrived at the scene.

"This was not a random act of violence," he said. "Both parties knew each other and had known each other for some time."

The teen was detained for questioning. Based on the investigation so far, Hensley said he has since been charged with possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon, obstruction of justice and false informing. He's being held at the Juvenile Detention Center in Jeffersonville.

Hensley said that because New Albany Police investigators are "occupied with other investigations," ISP will lead the investigation into Monday morning's shooting.

This latest homicide comes as New Albany police continue to search for suspects in a triple shooting at the Harvest Homecoming festival that killed 18-year-old Bryce Gerlach just two weeks ago. Trooper Hensley acknowledged the community’s growing concerns, with two murders occurring so close together in what is typically seen as a safe area.

"You could possibly attribute that to spilling over from Louisville," he said. "Different upticks in crime, not specific to New Albany, it's finally starting to catch up with us."

Investigators are working to figure out what led to Trumbo being shot. The Floyd County Prosecutor's Office will review the case and determine whether additional charges will be filed.
