Louisville, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say two men were caught on camera stealing wallets from elderly women in stores across the city, then using their credit cards to rack up thousands of dollars in purchases.

Investigators say Nathaniel Porter III and Virgil Mozee worked together to steal wallets from at least three women shopping at Walgreens, Kroger and Meijer. The suspects were seen on surveillance video reaching into purses or carts, when victims weren’t looking.

“The suspects were stealing wallets from elderly people,” Sgt. Joe Keeling with LMPD said.

According to police, the pair immediately used the stolen cards to buy prepaid Visa cards, racking up $5,013.92 before the victims realized what had happened.

Police arrested both Porter III and Mozee on Sunday and seized their vehicles.

According to police, Mozee is a pastor at the New Christian Church of Jesus Christ on La Salle Avenue. When he was arrested Sunday, officers said he was on his way to the church and admitted to the crimes.

Police say Mozee is being investigated for other crimes, including possible crimes against the church he pastors.

“(Mozee) even admitted that he's been doing it for years, and he thinks he's done thousands of these type of crimes,” Keeling said. “He says he's been a pickpocket since he was 12 years old.”

Both men were charged with theft by unlawful taking, fraudulent use of credit cards, trafficking in financial information and engaging in organized crime.

At a Kroger store where one of the thefts occurred, shopper Judy Gliessner said the news made her uneasy.

“I didn't know they hit this store,” Gliessner said. “It's getting scary to come out in this world.”

LMPD asks those who believe they might be a victim to call 502-574-LMPD (5673).
