LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A neighborhood in east Louisville got hit hard with car break-ins earlier this week, causing concerns for residents.

"My car was locked, they smashed the window, used the garage door opener to open the garages and stole a car that was in the garage all while I was home and heard it," a woman who had her car stolen out of her garage.

The woman, who doesn't want to be identified, said she heard her garage doors open and her car start around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.

"At that point, I didn't care about the cars, or anything that was in the garages, I was more concerned about my kids," she said.

The woman told WDRB she believes three or five people were involved in the theft, and the same group had already broken into other neighbors' cars before coming to her house.

"I don't think anybody is immune to this level of crime, no matter what part of the city you live in, no matter how great your security system is, it doesn't stop them," she said.

In October, Louisville Police warned residents about a group of armed suspects targeting homes and cars in southwest Louisville.

We haven't confirmed if it's the same group, but last month LMPD Sgt. Joe Keeling said investigators believe it's not just one group responsible.

"The car thefts is obviously a citywide problem that's been going on for a while now. There are multiple crews doing it," said Keeling.

The woman said she's filed a police report, but the one thing she learned is to not give people a reason to break in.

"These criminals are always a step ahead of the police no matter how many cops we have, we still can only do what we can in our control, which is don't give them the bait," she said.

We've reached out to LMPD asking to confirm the details of these break-ins and what the next steps are in these investigations. We're waiting to hear back.
