LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Russell County Sheriff's Deputy was killed Monday night in the line of duty.

According to Kentucky State Police, officers were conducting an investigation around 5:30 p.m. on Bluebird Drive in Russell Springs that resulted in Deputy Joshua Phipps being shot and killed.

Another man was taken to a local hospital following the shooting and was pronounced dead after his arrival.

Phipps, a 3-year veteran of the department, was also a former Louisville Metro Police officer who graduated from the Metro Academy in Feb. 2021. He worked in LMPD's 2nd Division as a patrol officer until he resigned in May 2021.

"Tragic news for our commonwealth as a Russell County deputy was killed in the line of duty last night," Gov. Andy Beshear said in a news release on Tuesday. “Britainy and I ask all of Kentucky to join us in praying for his family, fellow law enforcement officers and the entire Russell County community.”

KSP officers are leading the investigation.
