LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Shively police officer is suspended without pay after investigators said he used Flock cameras to conduct 2,048 unauthorized searches involving the mother of his child.
Shively Police Chief Col. Andre Bottoms said Wednesday that officer Asad Zahir, who joined the department in 2022, conducted 2,048 searches involving two vehicles connected to the woman. Police said she is not associated with any active criminal investigation.
The searches date back to Jan. 1, 2026, including 241 conducted between April 17 and May 6.
The investigation began Monday after Shively Police enabled a new AI-powered auditing tool from Flock. Bottoms said it immediately flagged roughly 1,200 searches involving one license plate and more than 800 involving another.
Officers are required to provide a legitimate law enforcement reason when accessing Flock data. Bottoms said Zahir listed a drug or narcotics investigation as the reason for the searches, despite there being no criminal case involving the woman.
"Accountability cannot depend on who you are or the position you're in. This is what accountability looks like," Bottoms said.
The department previously audited Flock usage every 90 days, but the new system automatically audits the entire department daily. Bottoms said Shively Police is also reviewing its Flock policies and will now require officers to associate searches with a specific case number.
Bottoms called the allegations a "gut punch" for the small department but said Zahir's alleged actions do not reflect the department as a whole.
Zahir was arrested Tuesday night at the Shively Police Department and is facing several charges, including official misconduct. He has been suspended without pay and has no police powers, badge or department-issued firearm while the criminal and internal investigations continue.
Investigators are also reviewing which cameras Zahir accessed and whether any were outside Kentucky.
Detective Sgt. Jordan Brown is leading the investigation.
