LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The University of Kentucky Police Department is stepping up safety measures following a school year that saw increased crime on campus.

One of the ways UK Police is increasing safety on campus is through a new drone program. The department is one of the first departments in Kentucky to implement this technology, LEX18 reported. UK Police launch the drone, and it instantly sends the video to the police operations center and to patrol cars.

UK Police Chief Joe Monroe said the drone can travel anywhere on campus under 90 seconds.

The force is also installing a mobile command unit. The unit will aid officers on the North Campus, a late-night entertainment area that saw increased crime last year.

In addition, UK Police also encourage students to download the Safe Zone App, where students can request immediate assistance at their location, submit anonymous tips, and get a late-night virtual police escort.

At least a half-dozen sexual assaults were reported on campus since late last year, with several of those victims saying their knew their alleged attackers. In June, UK Police investigated after a car was intentionally set on fire in the parking lot behind Memorial Coliseum.
