LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville woman was arrested after allegedly trying to kidnap an 8-year-old girl and break into her home in the Portland neighborhood.
Court records show Charra Lewis, 42, was arrested Saturday, Aug. 1. She's charged with attempted kidnapping of a minor and attempted second-degree burglary.
According to documents, the victim's family flagged down Louisville Metro Police Department officers to report the incident.
The 8-year-old victim told officers she was on the sidewalk across from her house when Lewis approached her and asked if she needed help finding her mother. The child also said Lewis tried to give her an item.
According to the arrest citation, the girl ran toward her house as Lewis allegedly chased after her to try to restrain her. The victim made it inside her home and locked the door.
The arrest citation alleges Lewis grabbed a metal garden pole and beat on the door to get in, damaging a window screen. Officers said they found a handprint left on the side of the house.
Officers later stopped Lewis. According to court documents, Lewis claimed to believe the child did not belong to the victim's mother and that she was trying to take her to "save" her.
Lewis' arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3.
