NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- The damage from a fire at a southern Indiana storage facility Tuesday evening is worse than initially reported.

Security at National Storage on Charlestown Road, at McDonald Lane, in New Albany said nearly 50 units are a total loss, and about 20 have smoke damage.

Customers who went to the facility Wednesday to check on their belongings were turned away. Security blocked the front gate, and said the property was closed while the state fire marshal works to determine a cause of the fire.

According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's Office of the State Fire Marshal, Division of Fire and Building Safety, the property is closed to the general public or anyone with a storage unit on the property because the investigation is ongoing.

"When time permits and the investigation continues, areas or parts of the property will be opened at different times," the department offices said in a statement.

The fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday according to Tim Kron, deputy chief of the New Albany Fire Department.

Kron said five engines and two ladder trucks responded, and got the fire under control within 30 minutes of arriving on scene. At the time, the deputy chief said there were an estimated 20-30 units that were considered total losses, and said other units were damaged by smoke and water.

Photos and video sent to WDRB from viewers at the scene showed visible smoke and flames billowing over the buildings.

John Fogel spotted the flames as he went to grab dinner, and said he returned Wednesday to check on his niece's storage unit.

"We seen all these firetrucks pulled up here and everything and the place was just like gushing," Fogel said. "The smoke was really strong and heavy and, I mean, it was like, it was just really pitch black."

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The cost for replacements and repairs on what was destroyed is also unclear at this time.
