LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Demolition of the Givaudan plant in the Clifton neighborhood is planned to begin Monday, Jan. 19.

Two workers were killedĀ and 11 others were hurt in the Nov. 12, 2024, explosion that also damaged nearby homes and businesses.

Investigators found the explosion was caused wasĀ a cooking vessel failure. A state investigation found the issue that caused the vessel to explodeĀ had been documented months before.Ā 

Officials said the wrecking permit has been issued and the company plans to have equipment and contractors on site beginning Monday.

Here's the Givaudan demolition plan:

  • Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Weather will play a factor and could result in some weeks including Fridays or weekends.
    • Should hours need to change one week, the wrecking contractor will notify the Clifton Community Council.
  • The planned disposal route leaving the site:
    • Right onto Payne Street
    • Left onto Spring Street
    • Left on Lexington Road
    • Left onto Grinstead Drive
    • Merge on Interstate 64
  • For dust control, they will have particulate monitoring on the fence line and will also be performing visual checks. Misting will be used as needed for dust control.
  • The work is anticipated to last 40 days.

As for the future of the site, Louisville's mayor said there are efforts to rezone it for something other than manufacturing.
